Little known Gambia Civil Aviation Authority Football Club continues its giant killing performance in the domestic Gambia Football Federation Cup competition by securing a place in the last eight of the competition on Thursday. They defeated second division league leaders Sporting Real on a post-match penalty shootout following a goalless stalemate at the end of regulation time.
The Civil Aviation, a team that plies their trade in the third tier of the West Coast Regional Football Association had defeated Brikama United in the previous round to book a date with the Banjul-based side looking for a place in the top flight of the Gambian league. Playing under the floodlights at Bakau’s Independence Stadium in a match that got underway at 9pm on Thursday, the Aviation Boys refused to be intimidated and in the end send a more experience and favourites Sporting Real packing.
Elsewhere, in Gambian football’s most prestigious cup competition, Real de Banjul secured a 2-1 defeat of Lions of Banjul in the 11:00pm kickoff at the Stadium. Real had taken a 1-0 first half lead after a Lions of Banjul player deliberately blocked a goal bound effort with his hands but because there was a sea of bodies in the box, he only awarded the spot kick as he couldn’t identify the culprit.
