The Senior National Football Team of The Gambia today held a training session at the Independence Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s African Cup of Nations qualifier at home to the Palancas Negras of Angola.
The Scorpions, top of Group D on seven points, trained at the main ball of the Stadium at 5pm after their visitors had used the same facilities an hour earlier. Bottom of the four-team group, the Angolans arrived in Banjul this morning with Tom Saintfiet’s charges looking for a double over them following a 3-1 win in Angola in Match Day one of the qualifiers in 2019, Gambia’s first ever competitive away win in over three decades.
The Gambians, who could become the first ever African side to begin from the preliminaries and secure a place at an AFCON Finals have their destiny in their own hands with two matches remaining, starting with tomorrow’s 4pm kickoff encounter. A home win coupled with a defeat for the DR Congo against Gabon would secure a maiden AFCON ticket for The Gambia in our 69-year-old association football history, rendering the final group match in Kinshasa on Monday a carnival affair.
After the training, Head Coach Tom Saintfiet spoke to the local media in a pre-match press conference.
