Gambia Scorpions’ quest for the country’s maiden appearance at next year’s Nations Cup Finals in Cameroon now lies in the balance as the Scorpions narrowly lost one nil to the Hawks of Togo in Match Day Four played on Tuesday 16th October at home before a decent crowd at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

The Gambia although still in the race for a berth to the 2019 edition, will have to perform winning spree in its two matches remaining at home to Benin in November and away to Algeria in 2019.

Togo scored through its play maker Ayite Floyd and maintaining their lead although the Scorpions had clear cut chances through Assan Ceesay in his striking combination with Musa Barrow and Lamin Jallow at upfront.

Coach Tom Sainfiet brought in Abli Jallow in place for Sulayman Marreh to add more fluidity in the middle as the Scorpions were running out of patience for a play maker to fire upfront as Morocco based Muhammed Badamosi also came on for Lamin Jallow to marshal against the Togolese defense.

Proving futile at full time on one nil, Tom Sainfiet at post match press conference said he is disappointed with the result but the performance from the team was really good although a few players according to him lack urgency. ‘We are still in the race because we have two more matches to go’.

Algeria and Benin are joint top on 7 points while Togo sits second on 5 points and the Gambia maintains 2 points.
