The North Bank Regional third division league continues to gather pace with the ten teams divided into two playing zones; all hoping to be crowned the regional champions with a their eyes on one big prize, securing a possible promotion to the second tier national league championship.
In the Eastern zone, Farafenni Mauritani and Rockland Football Club are locked on five points each at the summit of the five-team table after three matches. They both secured a win and two draws while Timeless Football Club and Jokadou FC also share joint third on two points each. Bijankerr Football Club currently occupies the base of the table with no point to show off from their opening matches.
In the Western zone, traditional regional powerhouses Barra United continuous to set the pace by translating their dominance in the community-based football to the league level. They are currently in pole position with five points from three games while Kunta Kinteh is breathing right under their noses in second with a point behind.
Meanwhile, in the weekend matches, Joko FC of Fass played a 1-1 stalemate with Essau United. The draw sees Joko moves to third on two points while it was Essau’s first point secured thus far in the league. Jambarr Football Club of Mayamba is currently at the bottom of the table with no point to show for their efforts.
The regions are now playing competitive and recognised third division leagues following logistical and preparatory support from The Gambia Football Federation (GFF). For the first time in the history of the country, teams outside of the Greater Banjul Area and the Kombos are this year playing in the national league with B4U Kiang West and 2nd Infantry Batallion playing in the second tier following their respective championship triumphs in Lowe River and North Bank Regions.
