Reigning Women’s League Champions Red Scorpions made history by winning their first domestic double following a 2-1 victory over Interior FC on Saturday 6th July at the Independence Stadium.
Interior started well, dominating possession with lots of scoring chances and could have taken the lead after referee Ebrima Sama pointed to the spot for what was adjudged to be a foul by goalkeeper Raby Colley against Jabou Jobarteh. Raby made amends by saving Jabou’s spot.
Red Scorpions struggled to get going as Interior played a high pressing game with Jabou Jobarteh, Mbassy Darboe, Fatou Darboe and Metta Sanneh all tormenting the Reds’ defense. It was goalless at halftime as Interior dominated proceedings.
The second half took a difference as Red Scorpions picked up from were Interior left it, dominating play and creating chances. Adama Tamba hit the bar with a spectacular shot. However, Tamba later opened the scoring after 63 minutes with a 30 yards thunderbult and ended up at the top left corner of the Interior net to give her side the lead. Interior responded with an equaliser through Fatou Darboe as she made a solo run after picking a pass in the Red Scorpions half beating defenders before unleashing a powerful low shot with the Red Scorpions defence failing to deal with her.
Both coaches shortly brought in fresh legs and one of them was young sensation Ola Buwaro who’s coiling effort from 35 yards went just inches over the bar. But again Adama Tamba showed why she’s undoubtedly the best female player at the moment by the poking in the winner with just few minutes remaining.
It eventually ended 2-1 to Red Scorpions and earning them a double in 2019 and bringing the curtain down on the GFF Women’s football season.
