The Kanifing Municipality regional third division league enters the business end with former second division campaigners Serrekunda United amongst the teams chasing for promotion to the country’s second tier competition.
It was 20 teams that began the campaign and they were divided into two groups of ten teams each and having all played nine matches, the top four from either groups qualified to the quarterfinal stages, serving as the second round. The league is again divided into two separate groups with each team to play three matches and the two top finishers from each group would qualify to the semifinal stages where they will play for a place in the finals.
The two semifinal winners would then play in a one-off playoff final to determine the champions of the region who would then represent KM at the national triangular championship. This would bring together the champions of all the seven regions to determine which teams would participate in the second division for the 2019/20 season.
In Group A action on Monday, Superstars Academy were held to a 1-1 draw by B.K. West United while Serrekunda United saw off the challenge from Football Hero FC with a narrow 1-0 win. With the win, Serrekunda United is top of the table with three points followed by Superstars Academy and B.K. West United in joint second. Football Hero is at the base of the group with no point to show off from their opening game.
Action will get underway in Group B today when Real de Dippakunda entertains one of the oldest clubs in the country, Flamemins, at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda. The Gambia Prisons Department will also lock horns with Falcons Football Club at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium in the other match.
