Gambia Young Scorpions have recorded a rare feat in the country’s Football of recent in Continental tournament when the National U-20 Team sailed over Mali in the narrowest scorelines of margins one nil at WAFU Group B final round of Group Matches on Sunday April 29th at the Tolbert Stadium in Monrovia.
Brikama United Habibou Mendy was the hero for the day in the first half which continued until the end of regular time. Although Mali pushed well into Gambia’s goal area but the Young Scorpions combative approach at defense thwarted all Mali chances.
Gambia repeated its fluidity at mid field with maestro Saikou Touray and play maker Abdoulie Sarr and caught the attention of the WAFU Technical Study Group earning Young Scorpions Vice Captain Saikou Touray Man of the Match, the second time for the Gambia in their three outings.
In the other final group match, Senegal humiliated Guinea 4-2 but could not advance through though.
At one nil, the Gambia stands at second on 5 points while Mali maintain lead position on 6 points. Thus the result means the Gambia will now face off Ivory Coast in the second semi final on Tuesday 2nd April while Liberia takes on Mali in the other Group Semi Final. The Gambia and Ivory Coast are the only two sides to concede a defeat yet in the tournament.
