Gambia Young Scorpions will face off with West African neighbors Guinea Conakry on Wednesday April 25th in WAFU Group B opening matches at the Sameul K Doe Stadium in Monrovia as the West Africa Football Union tournament continues to build momentum.

Earlier on Tuesday, hosts Liberia lost to Ivory Coast three nil in the opening in the afternoon kick off while Sierra Leone also triumphed over Bissau 2-1 in the evening fixture.

The Gambia arrived in Monrovia on Monday April 23rd and took off to their first training session amid buoyant mood at the team hotel accompanied by a strong delegation headed by Retired Army General and Chairman of GFF Super Nawettan Committee Lang Tombong Tamba.

At his pre tournament press conference, Head Coach Mattar Mboge said the primary objectives in the WAFU tournament is ‘for us to do all what we can and to further use the tournament to prepare for the AfCON U-20 Qualifier. I want to do the.best for my country, family and Friends because this is the first opportunity for me as COACH of the National U-20 team’.
Mattar said he has confidence in the boys, ‘ because the selection process has given chance to all the players to proof their abilities so that no one is been left out’.

The Gambia will on Wednesday evening take on Guinea Conakry in Group B second game at 6:00pm at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia.

The opening game of the WAFU tournament was witnessed by former world Footballer and President of Liberia George Weah.
