The Gambia Scorpions have climbed to the top of the standings in Afcon Group D Qualifiers following their emphatic 2-1 win over the panthers of Gabon in Match Day Four of the Qualifiers held at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Monday 16th November 2020.
The return leg of the Qualifiers came at the scenes of Gambia’s humble and narrow lost away to Gabon four days ago in Franceville 2-1 in the resumption of the Qualifiers but the reverse fixture in Banjul came the similar scoreline for the Scorpions and ticking the Gambia back on top of the standings in Group D with 7 points (+2).
Two goals from the Barrow brothers (Modou and Musa) in the second half earned the gallant Scorpions confidence to maintain their lead behind closed doors at the Independence Stadium. The Scorpions took 44 percent of ball possession although Gabon leads on 56 percent but the Scorpions earned more shots on target at 4 against Gabon’s slimmest 2.
Gabon pulled one back at the later stages of the closing stanza after clearing a congested Gambian defense and slotting their only consolation.
The win means The Gambia is now top of the standings in Group D on 7 points with +2 goals while Gabon comes closer on 7 points as well but +1. DR Congo and Angola are on 3 and 1 points respectively who play each other on Tuesday 17th November in Luanda.
