The Gambia Women’s U 20 Young Scorpions over the weekend made a comeback to overturn their one nil slender defeat to Burkina Faso and edged them out after a 4-3 penalty shoot outs to secure their advancement to the next stage of the FIFA U20 Womens World Cup Qualifiers at a game played at the Benin’s Charles De Gaule Stadium in Porto on Saturday 9th October 2021.
It was Greater tomorrow’s defender Wuday Colley who secured the only goal of the match at regulation time to give an advantage to the visitors who eventually levelled 1-1 on aggregate.
With the only goal of the game, the Gambia pushed the affairs to penalty shoot outs with Fatoumata Jammeh’s decisive winning goal taking the young Scorpions in celebration mood for the country’s victory after a 4-3 scoreline against hosts Burkina Faso.
The young Scorpions played with vigor, determination and one common goal coming from a one nil defeat at home in the first leg of the Qualifiers played in Banjul a week ago.
Reacting to the game shortly after the victory, Coach Foday Bah said he cannot be prouder of his team than the massive victory and hard work that paid off today. The veteran gaffer noted that despite the size of his girls incomparable to their opponents , the Gambian girls were hard to break and played all their hearts out. “We played as a team and the performance is beyond excellence yet again. I am so proud of the girls, everyone played with hunger and fought for the victory”. He noted that his focus is now on the next game and hopes that they continue training and working harder to approach every game with a strong mentality and fitness.
Sainabou Cham and Sang Ndong, Head of Delegation and Technical Adviser both expressed delight and joy over the victory which they both described as deserved win.
The team returns to Banjul on Sunday afternoon where training is expected to resume shortly for a continuation of the Qualifiers.
