Teenage midfield sensation Lamarana Jallow has left Elite United to join Sporting Lisbon’s U-23 side, the Portuguese premier league champions announced yesterday.
Known for his discipline, determination, mesmerising skill, killer assists and scoring goals from any side of the pitch, Jallow was a permanent fixture and arguably one of Gambia’s best players during its run to a third-place finish at the African U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania earlier this year. The box-to-box midfielder twice won man-of-the-match performance in the six matches it played at the competition.
Speaking to Sporting’s official website, Jallow, who was also part of the Young Scorpions WAFU Cup winning team in Senegal expressed his delight in signing for one of the most historic teams in European football.
“I want to thank Sporting CP for the opportunity to play for a club with so much history and which is the current national champion. I’m happy to be part of this family, where great players took their first steps,” he said.
Coach Filipe Pedro who manages the team in the U-23 reserve league of Portugal described the Tallinding-born player as another solution for him. “He arrives from Elite United and is happy to represent a club with so much history.”
Gambia’s U-23 Coach is Matarr M’Boge who helped the youngster to grow into the caliber of player he is today, during their time together at the U-20. He was full of excitement and praise for the lad. “This is a big sense of pride to see him sign for one of the biggest clubs in Europe,” he said.
“The club is famous for producing world class talent and Lamarana has the potential to follow their footsteps. I can say that there was a huge amount of interest in the lad which shows his level of talent. I can only congratulate Sporting Lisbon for picking up a quality young player.”
