Gambia National U-20 Team returns to Banjul on Tuesday May 22nd after they were edged out by Benin in the return fixture of the Total African U-20 Cup of Nations Niger, 2019 Qualifiers.
The Young Scorpions went down two nil to the Junior Squirrels on Sunday May 20th at the Stade Amite in Cotonou and thus ending their high hopes of progressing to the next and final stage of the Qualifiers where the winner will square off Ghana.
The Gambia’s lost to Benin came on the heels of frustrating atmosphere in Cotonou where the hosts apparently intimidated the visitors upon arrival and thus denying them entry into the stadium for first day training. The team was shown hostility at its height and resorted to shortened its training period on the eve of the match after Benin forcibly also entered into the stadium claiming to start their session on time.
However, the Gambia kept their composure and went cool into the weekend game at the Stade De Amite.
Match proceedings began with a vociferous roaring of the home fans aimed at silencing the visitors.
The match nonetheless ended 2 nil to Benin and 3-2 on aggregate thus ending Gambia’s hopes to progress to the next phase.
The team is expected back home in Banjul on Tuesday May 22nd
