Having finished third at the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Mauritania, Gambia’s U-20 players continue to secure professional contracts across various league, mainly in Europe.

Following Kajali Drammeh’s move to South Africa last week, the latest addition to that crop of Young Scorpions to secure a professional contract is Hawks defender Lamin Jawara. The 20-year-old penned a long-term deal with Danish second tier side Viborg FF until the summer of 2026 following a successful trial.

The Danes announced that the tough-tackling defender had been training with the team this winter where he played in two friendly matches. Thus, he impressed enough to be offered a professional contract. Sports Manager Jesper Fredberg expressed delight in finally sealing the deal with the young defender which he said was “disrupted by coronavirus and visa”.

Jawara expressed delight in the deal, describing it as a long process that required patience and giving it all your strength. Having helped his team won the WAFU regional championship in Senegal, thus securing Gambia a place in the AFCON, Jawara’s performance in Mauritania was rewarded with his inclusion in the Team of the Tournament.

Mattar M’Boge, who guided the young defender during his spell with the Young Scorpions also described the defender’s move as timely. “As coaches, we’re always pleased to see the growth and transitioning of young players and all we would always do is to help them grow better and get to the peak of their football careers achieving their dreams,” he told GFF Media.
