The Gambia Local based National Team (CHAN) succumbed to a narrow one nil lost to Ghana in their opening match of the WAFU Cup of Nations 2019 tournament on Tuesday 1st October at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies.
The game described as fair and balance although Ghana dominated the opening minutes before Gambia regained possession upon second half resumption. This was until the Young Black Stars capitalized on Gambia’s defensive woes to rally ahead of their fellow West Africans in front of goal at 60th minutes for a Ghana lead.
Gambia gained penalty at the 82nd minutes but fingertip punch saved Captain Modou Cham’s converted kick and spoils what could have been a Gambia equalizer. The remaining minutes became eventful as Ghana struggled to maintain their lead while Gambia continue to find an equalizer.
At post match Press Conference, Gambian Coach Omar Sise said he reserves congratulation to his Ghanaian counterpart for losing to him for the second time. “This is the second time that we are meeting and losing to him”. Sise sounded apologetic to Gambian fans “because they always have their hope on me”, he noted.
The Gambia will now take on Mauritania in the Plate (a round of matches reserved for Knock Out losers ) while Ghana progresses to the Quarter Finals of the Cup of Nations.
