A veteran educationist and sports enthusiast, Abou Khan, has been described by many as the quintessential gentleman. You can go to war with Mr. Khan and be assured that he will stick by you at all costs and wouldn’t mind taking a bullet for you.

Born in Kuntaya village of the Jokadou District in the North Bank Region, Abou Khan enrolled at the Teacher Training College in Brikama where he obtained his Primary Teachers Certificate (PTC) in 2001 and a Higher Teachers Certificate (HTC) in 2009. Besides teaching, Mr. Khan is an ardent sports development volunteer in his local community. Having served his village and its environs to an effective sports development success, he later rose through the ranks to the position of District Sports Chairman in Jokadu for fifteen years. Before that, he played football where he captained his district.

He was elected as the first Vice President of the North Bank Regional Football Association (NBRFA) in the formation of the RFA in 2013. However, by the 2017 Elective Congress, he was elected as President, unopposed, taking over the mantle of leadership from the FA’s first president in the person of Modou Mbissan. Khan would be re-elected, again unopposed, for a second term in 2021.

At the end of his second term, earlier this month, he decided to voluntarily retire from the region’s football leadership since there are no term limits in the regional football and allied association leaderships. He put all his weight behind his ex-second Vice President Mr. Ebrima Ceesay who was elected as the new President of the FA on Sunday.

In a symbolic show of sportsmanship and in recognition of the tremendous strides he made in the development of football in the Region, the NBRFA on Sunday, in line with Article 20.1 of its Constitution, conferred the distinguished title of Honorary President of the Association on Mr. Khan on the sidelines of its Elective Congress held in the region’s administrative capital of Kerewan.

Mr. Khan’s two terms as President of the RFA have been described by the NBRFA as one marked by vision, integrity, and a resolute commitment to the growth of football across the North Bank Region. This is indeed true as under his tenure as President, NBR football made giant strides both on and off the pitch. He was a champion of grassroots football and this was manifested by the amount of competitions organised by the region at all levels.

“The General Assembly paid glowing homage to his legacy, describing his service as a source of inspiration for future football administrators. His elevation to Honorary President ensures that his name and contributions will forever remain etched in the annals of NBRFA’s history. We congratulate President Abou Khan for his service in placing a laudable structure for the people of North Bank Region and the country in extension,” the NBRFA said in a statement.

Under his tenure as President of the RFA, the number of participating teams in the region’s third division league saw a gradual increase in terms of participation to 20, increasing the player pool and ensuring enhanced competition for a very populous area. The third division women’s league in NBR also began under his term as president, culminating with the promotion to the national league of three teams in Lower Nuimi, Mansawally, and Young Icons.

The Second Infantry Battalion of Farafenni became the first team in the region to play in the men’s national second-division league and despite their subsequent relegation to the third tier, Essau United has since also joined the elites and competing in the second division for the 2024/25 season. Regional FA Cup competitions were also organized by the region, bringing together all teams affiliated with the NBRFA, including clubs and academies.

Off the pitch as well, several capacity-building programs were undertaken by the region through the Gambia Football Federation’s (GFF) CARMS initiative, which means the training of Coaches, Administrators, Referees, Medics, and Securities. This has resulted in better organization of their competitions. “I’ve served my region diligently and I believe that the time is right to hand over the mantle of leadership to the younger generation [led by Ebrima Ceesay] to come out and showcase their talents,” Mr. Khan told the GFF Media.

As he takes his bow as the head of the region’s football association, Mr. Khan’s footprints will forever be etched in the annals of football history for the region. Such was his impact, commitment, and dedication to his region, he has assured to always serve and guide the new leadership in their quest to consolidate the gains made in the past few years.
