The Scorpions’ quest for a place at its maiden AFCON finals returns in March when they host Angola and play away to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a double-header to determine Group D’s two representatives at Cameroon in 2022.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) this week confirmed the dates for match day five and six with Tom Saintfiet’s charging hosting the Palancas Negras on Thursday the 25th with kickoff set for 16:00GMT at Bakau’s Independence Stadium before it conclude its campaign away to the Leopards four days later on March 29 at Kinshasa’s Stade des Martyrs.

The Scorpions are in a strong position to qualify for the African Cup of Nations finals for the first time following a 2-1 home win over Gabon in match day four to top the four-team standings with seven points.

They share the same number of points with the Gabonese but the Gambians lead on goal difference. DR Congo is third with six points while Angola is rooted to the bottom of the standings with a solitary point.

Saintfiet, who is expected to announce his preliminary squad sometime later, masterminded shock defeats over Gabon and away to Angola and drew at home 2-2 with DR Congo. The Scorpions need a maximum four points to secure a place in the finals for the first time in the history of Gambian football.
