Gambia National team Manager Ousman Drammeh said the Scorpions are apologetic to the general public for narrowly missing out a spot at the World Cup 2022 Qualifier stages following the team’s 3-2 aggregate lost to Angola in the recently concluded preliminary double header.
Drammeh posted the note on his social media timeline upon returning from Luanda at the end of the campaign.
“Our appologies to the general public and Gambian football fans for the disappointing results against Angola. There are so many attributes one may use to blame us for the recent defeats ranging from technical, administrative, social etc”. He went further and noted that despite the fact that a lot needs to be done in terms of logistics, “the gap between us and these other nations is still something in terms of the level of experience, the infrastructure, finances which are all key performance tools that aparently influence results”.
He said as a country and knowing that trying to do something that has never happened is quite a daunting task as “Gambia never qualifies to a major tournament”. Manager Drammeh nonetheless assures the fans and general public that change will happen as the team have learnt lessons in the past campaign which according to him can only make the Scorpions better for subsequent matches. “We will come back stronger and put up a respectable performance to keep our hopes alive to try to qualify to the next Afcon”, he concluded.
The Gambia lost one nil to Angola in the first leg of the campaign and 2-1 away in the return leg in Luanda and 3-2 On aggregate and thus missed out for a spot at the Qualifiers proper.
