The head coach of the Gambia CHAN team, Alhagie Sarr, has reacted to today’s draw for the playoffs of the 2025 TotalEnergies African Nations Championships where the Scorpions have been paired against Gabon in the first knockout round.
The Scorpions will host the first leg of the qualifiers in the weekend of 28th February to 2nd March 2025 with the second and deciding leg to be played a week later in either Libreville or Franceville. The winner of the tie takes on Algeria in May for a place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda,
Speaking in an interview with the in-house GFF Media in the post-draw interview, Sarr expressed delight in the outcome of the draw. “I’m so happy that we are going to play with Gabon in the qualifiers,” he said, adding that the team is prepared to qualify for its first ever CHAN tournament. Sarr further noted that local preparations are at advanced stages hence the first bloc of screening exercise is completed today with 30 players being maintained.
“We will resume training with the 30 players on Monday and will further trim the number to 23 that will be used as the final list for the squad. I want to conclude by thanking the GFF for the support and I am also calling on the football family for more support to be able to qualify the team to its first CHAN tournament,” he concluded.
