The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) wishes to inform its stakeholders, the media and the general public that the artificial football pitch located at the National Technical Training Center in Old Yundum has been named after the late Ousman Saho.
Consequently, the public is hereby urged that henceforth, the said pitch should be referred as such the Ousman Saho football ground.
The late Ousman Saho was a soccer man born into a football home and has made an indelible mark on the development of football in The Gambia. His younger brother Baboucarr, also of blessed memory, was a goalkeeper and represented the National Team of The Gambia on several occasions.
The senior Saho was born and raised in the Serrekunda suburb of the Kanifing Municipality but would later became a resident of Brikama town in the Western region. He was into petroleum business with a company called Best Petroleum (BP).
He founded Saraba Football Club in the, a team known across every nook and cranny of this country in the 1980s, most especially for its flamboyant style of play and a support base punctuated with pomp and fanfare. He registered them in the Serrekunda Nawettan in 1982 year and would go on to win the knockout cup that same year. Saraba, having produced many household names in The Gambia was the first team outside of the Greater Banjul Area to have won a coveted Nawettan Cup in Serrekunda.
Amongst the prominent names to have been associated with the defunct Saraba are Ebrima Bojang, Solo Gibba, James Freeman, Abdoulie Bobb, Kebba Touray (KK), Malick Bah, Abdoulie Star Njie, Mustapha Minteh, Buba Cham, Yusuf Badjie, Micheal Demba (Micky B) and Alieu Badara Jarju to name a few.
In 1985, Mr. Saho used his trucks and personal resources to provide trips of sand for the construction and fencing of the Box Bar Mini Stadium in Brikama, which was completed in 1987.
