After the death was announced of Alhaji Momodou Dibba, former President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, the President of the Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kabba Bajo, has quickly reacted to the passing on of Mr Dibba. He described the development as ‘ a shock news that rocked the country’.
Mr Bajo, who is currently at the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Zambia, said the late Alhaji Momodou Dibba was a man of the people with an excellent record of long standing administrative credentials coupled with his vast experience in sports circles.
“We have lost a man who is a beacon of hope for sports administration and every sector of the society in the country. Mr Dibba has dedicated part of his life to the upliftment of sports in the country and his passing away is sad news to the fraternity”, Mr Bajo said.
The GFF boss, who is also the 2nd Vice President of the Gambia’s Olympic Committee said the late Dibba has set a pace for the new Olympic leadership to take over from. “May his soul and the ones that have passed on rest in peace. We’ll continue to remember him in our daily prayers.”
Until his death, Mr. Momodou Dibba was the president of The Gambia Draughts Federation and served as president of The Gambia National Olympic Committee for five years between 2011 and 2016 when he retired from the Olympic House. He made a name for himself during his stint as the secretary general of the then Gambia Football Association in the 1970s when Football House was based at the Box Bar Stadium in the nation’s capital Banjul.
He’s been described by many as one of the greatest, if not the greatest Secretary General in Gambian football and hailed for his hands down brilliance and great leadership in football administration. He is been credited as the man who presided over the naming of the Gambia National Football Team as Scorpions from the Gambia Eleven in the early 1980s.
Mr. Dibba was admired for his tenacity, strong character and leadership skills and an action-oriented man always willing to listen and welcomed ideas. His demise has been described as a great loss to The Gambia, not only in sports administration but in every sector of our society. The late Dibba was laid to rest on Monday 29th February at the Kanifing cemetery.
