The Gambia Young Scorpions will face tournament hosts Liberia in the final of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU ) U-20 tourney slated for Saturday May 5th in Monrovia.

The Gambia edged out Ivory Coast after a one all draw at full time and 8-7 on eventual post match penalty shootouts to reach to the coveted stage for the second time of the country’s history in recent.

Young Scorpions striker and captain Basirou Mbye was the maverick for the Gambian lads as he stroke an early goal with his powerful body balancing to clear an Ivorian defense and slot in the lead that went into the second period.

Ivory Coast pulled one back for an equalizer upon second half resumption quarter way before the end of full time. The stalemate continued and post match shootouts decided the winner. The Gambia 8-7 Ivory Coast.

Meanwhile in the other Semi Final match, Liberia accounted for Mali 1-0 in their semi-final clash on Wednesday at the SKD Sports Complex. The surprise victory saw the Junior Lone Stars reach the final of a major international competition for the first time in over three decades.

The Gambia will now face tournament hosts Liberia in the final slated for Saturday May 5th at the Samuel Kayon Doe Stadium in Monrovia. The Young Scorpions continue to celebrate in singing and dancing after their hard earned but deserved win and eventual reaching to yet again a major continental final.

Wallidan FC player Modou Ndow earned Man of the match, been the third player to received such a prestigious feat. Previous Gambian Man of the match players were Abdoulie Sarr and Saikou Touray.
