The Gambia was yesterday pit against Ghana in the opening game of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations following the draw in Senegal. It’s a repeat of the opening match of the previous edition where a last gasp dubious penalty gave the Ghanaians a fortuitous 1-0 win on their way to winning the title in 2017.
In an interview with www.gambiaff.org, Omar K. Sise the Gambia’s CHAN Team Coach, who would guide the team to the competition, said the 16 teams will play in a knockout tie of eight different matches with the winners advancing to the group stages of the competition.
“It’s on a knockout basis and each team will play your opponent in the opener. The winners will progress while the losers will drop to be part of another tournament called ‘THE PLATE”. The knockout winners will continue to form two groups of four teams each for the WAFU Cup of Nations to play amongst themselves in their respective groups while the losers’ tournament will also roll on,” he said.
The tournament will be played between the 12th and 27th October, 2019 in the City of Thies, Senegal. The WAFU Cup of Nations is set aside for Senior National Team players of all categories of the WAFU Member Associations. Sixteen National Teams are invited from WAFU Zones A and B except for Sierra Leone who is still under suspension but is been replaced by the Kingdom of Morocco.
