Gambia National Women’s Scorpions were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Guinea Bissau female national team in their first friendly opener on Sunday June 16 at the Independence Stadium.
The Gambia took the lead through Adama Tamba in what was a cool finish from Gambia’s all time record goal scorer at Women’s Football just before the break. Bissau came from behind to equal the tally Courtesy of Tchalda Man well taken hit after a protracted scramble in the penalty area. Bissau renewed their hopes after deep into added time when Tchalda Man was to increase the scoring for her brace on a converted kick but was parried away by Mariama CEESAY to deny Bissau a smile.
After the game Sidico Queita head coach for Bissau said, it was a good test for his side and Gambia had very good players ” it was a game test for us because we has trained a lot but we put up a respectable performance. The Gambian team have some good players but we matched them and come on Tuesday it will be a different ball game”, he said.
On her part Gambia’s Mariama Bom Sowe said her team was unlucky and were wasteful in front of goal ” we created lot of chances but we fail to capitalize on them, we could have 5 goals up if all our chances were utilized. I am also not satisfied with the performance of the team tonight but expect a better performance from us on Tuesday” she said.
Team Captain Penda Bah said the team did not perform to expectation but promised to make amendments on Tuesday “we dominated the first half and got a goal but the team went down in the second half and we concede an equalizer. We will learn from this and on Tuesday it will be different” she said.
Gambia and Guinea Bissau will face off for the second and Final time on Tuesday at 8pm at the Independence Stadium to bring to an end a double header Friendly International.
