Brikama United are within one win of securing their second ever Gambian league title. This, following The Gambia Armed Forces’ (GAF) goalless stalemate with Samger at Bakau’s Independence Stadium on Saturday night, a result that sent the Cherno Samba Academy Boys to the second tier of Gambian football.
Brikama hosts GAF in the final game of the season next weekend with the knowledge that victory against the Soldiers will secure them win the title irrespective of the outcome of Real de Banjul’s final day fixture with Marimoo. Brikama is on 43 points, a point ahead of second place Real with GAF a further two points behind.
Therefore, a draw between Brikama and GAF will see he Whites pip them to the title with victory over Marimoo. Real had labored to a 1-0 defeat of The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) 24 hours earlier. However, the ‘Khaki Boys’ aren’t completely out of the race just yet. A big victory over Brikama coupled with a Real de Banjul defeat will see last year’s FF Cup winners win the title.
The draw under the floodlights on Saturday means Samger, who won the second division title last season are now four points behind 12th place Tallinding United and with only three points available for grab, they can no longer catch them on the table, thus they have joined PSV Wellingara as the two teams to be replaced in the top flight for the 2019/20 season. Ironically, the relegated duo were amongst the four teams promoted last year but the other two in Wallidan and B.K. Milan will retain their first division status’.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Banjul United and BK Milan played out an entertaining 1-1 draw. Banjul United are on 26 points from 25 games while BK Milan are 8th on an impressive 32 points in their debut campaign in the summit of Gambian football.
Two more games will be played tonight to bring the penultimate round of the fixtures to a close. Marimoo in 6th will entertain 5th place Hawks. A win for either side will take them above Fortune into 4th position. The other game will feature already relegated PSV Wellingara and dethroned champions Gamtel in a game that will have little or no effect on both sides’ current positions. The Wellingara outfit will be playing for pride after their relegation was confirmed earlier while the defending champions will be looking for a win to finish in a more respectable position as they are in a disappointing 10th with 30 points. A win will move them three places up to 7th level.
