Falcons continued its march towards a first ever top flight promotion by opening up a temporary three-point lead at the top of the domestic second tier league on Wednesday.
The Blue Army recorded a comprehensive 4-0 demolition of Latrikunda United at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field in Old Yundum. They now established a three-point advantage over second place Samger ahead of the Cherno Samba Academy outfit’s week 21 fixture at the same ground on Friday when they entertain 14th place Serrekunda Easttbi. Falcons have 43 points but a win for Samger would see them go joint leveled on the 16-team table. However, they’ll have to produce a similar dominant display with a heavy scoreline win to reclaim the top spot they ended the last week on.
In total, there were four matches played across different venues, producing 12 goals, an average of three goals per match. The biggest winners were Steve Biko who continued their recent resurgence by putting third place Jam City to the sword with a 5-0 annihilation at the Live Your Dreams Academy Sports Complex in Basori. Gambia U-17 lethal striker, Adama Bojang, was the star of the show by producing another man-of-the-match display with yet another hat-trick, his second of the campaign.
By securing their seventh win of the season, the Giant Killers, Biko, are now on 30 points, six ahead of Jam City, who remained in third. Gunjur has dropped to fifth ahead of their match with B4U Kiang West later today in Basori and victory will see them reclaim fourth spot. Ltrikunda United is two points adrift of Biko on the table.
Meanwhile, relegation threatened Immigration bounced back to defeat stuttering Bombada 1-0 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau to move leveled on 23 points with the Brikama side. Even at this stage of the season, with nine matches remaining, equating to 27 points on offer and, basement side, 2nd Infantry Battalion of Farafenni, looked doomed as they suffered an incredible 14th defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss to promotion chasing Team Rhino. Rhino, in the process moved to fourth position on 33 points, but the Soldiers need to put their acts together if they’re to avoid a drop to the third tier North Bank Regional League, three years after gaining promotion from the same division. However, it’s still early to call with the bottom seven just separated by six points.
As well as Gunjur’s meeting with Kiang, where they would be looking to overtake both Jam City and Team Rhino on the table with a win, two other matches will be played in the division today with 10th place PSV Wellingara taking on Red Hawks in eighth at the Late Ousman Saho Field in Yundum, and second from bottom Jarra West will host Young Africans at the Soma Mini Stadium.
