The Gambia National Women’s U-20 Scorpions came from behind to end up with a narrow lose to Burkina Faso 2-3 in the first leg of the Women’s World Cup preliminary Qualifier on Saturday 18th January 2020 at the 4th August Stadium in Ouagadougou.
The hosts scored first and added a brace before Gambia’s Catherine Jatta pulled one back for the Young Scorpions for the game to go into talk time. The Young Scorpions made much of the possessions but missed the killer instincts at goal before the hosts could made their two early goals.
The Gambia resumed with great intent and vigor earning Haddy Wally to equal the scoring 2-2. The Young Scorpions were reduced to ten girls after City Girls Neneh Jallow was shown a second yellow, a deficit at the advantage of the hosts. As pressure mounted against the visitors with a lesser number, Burkina Faso eventually added a third goal and sealed victory for themselves in the first leg.
The Young Scorpions return to Banjul on Sunday 19th January 2020 to resume preparation ahead of the return leg scheduled for 1st February at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. The Gambia’s two away goals in the first leg takes the Young Scorpions to a vantage position if they score in Banjul without any reply from their visitors.
The winner in the final leg will face off Nigeria in the next stage of the Qualifiers
