The Gambia Football Federation maiden Beach Soccer tournament has now reached to the final phase following the completion of the Semi Finals played over the weekend at the Palma Rima Sea Front. Garrmi and Steve Biko will square off for the final of the Federation’s newest sport the date of which will be announced by the Organizing Committee pretty soon.
Sixteen (16) teams participated in the tournament which was slotted into four Groups of four Teams.
Quarter Finals
The opening Quarter Finals was between Steve Biko FC and Sukuta Tigers in a mouth watering clash that saw both teams level on 6 goals at both regulation and extra time. The matched was then alternated with the last resort to decide the winner at a post match penalties where Steve Biko won 2-1, narrowly advancing to the Semi Finals and later to the Finals.
Garmi FC and Gambia Fire and Rescue Services (GFRS FC) also faced off each other on the same day and only for Garrmi to crush over the Fire Services 7-2 to advance to the Semi Finals while Kunkujang Friends United’s dream of playing the Semi finals were cut short after their 4-5 defeat against Gunjur United FC.
Latrikunda United’s 4-3 victory against Hawks FC was enough to shield their position in the Semi Finals on the same match day.
Semi Finals
Sterling performances continued from the Giant Killers Steve Biko at the first Semi Finals played on December 29th and for the second time leveling at regulation time against Latrikunda United at 3-3 and thus resorted to win3-1 on penalty shootouts. Garrmi FC however had a narrow edge over the boys from Kombo South Gunjur FC with a 5-4 victory to advance to the Finals.
Steve Biko and Garrmi have confirmed their positions to the tournament final while the third and forth positions between Gunjur FC and Latrikunda United FC will also be played on the Match Day Final at the Palma Rima Beach Front with the breeze of the ocean blowing over the pitch.
