Fortune Petroleum’s match towards its first league title continues with yet another narrow win over Hawks under the floodlights on Saturday night.

Jane Joof’s side, who have conceded a mere two goals all season, keeping 13 clean sheets in the process, are in a real championship form where they atone for their lack of more firepower upfront with a defensive solidity never seen before in Gambian league history.

The game also featured two ex-Scorpions as Momodou ‘Zico’ Ceesay made his protracted comeback in more than a decade-and-a-half for Fortune by playing from the start while former Augsburg midfielder Dawda Bah also featured for his boyhood club Hawks. However, it was Lamin Saidykhan, popularly known as Lefoe, who scored the game’s only goal with a stunning left-footed volley outside the box after a brilliant team effort.

Fortune has now re-established their nine-point lead over their nearest challengers Brikama United who defeated The Gambia Armed Forces 4-2 in a dramatic encounter on Thursday. Hawks remain in eight with 16 points from 15 matches.

Elsewhere, on Saturday night, Banjul United registered only its third win of the campaign following a scrappy 1-0 defeat of Gambia Ports Authority in the late kickoff. Musa Jarjue scored arguably the most important goal of his career as a Banjul United player when he expertly diverted home Ansu Juwara’s cross to send the United bench into wild celebrations.

With the win, Banjul United has put further daylight between themselves and the drop zone as they moved to 10th on the 14-team table with 15 points, leveled with BK Milan in ninth while Ports dropped to fifth with 21 points.

Meanwhile, the final game of week 15 will see relegation rivals Marimoo, second from bottom, and basement side Wallidan battle it out in a six-pointer with kickoff set for 9pm on Sunday night. Marimoo has 13 points, one ahead of the Blues and victory for either side will catapult them outside of the drop zone.
