The Gambia opened its WAFU engagement with a heavy loss to Mali in Match Day Two of the maiden WAFU A Women’s Football tournament Sierra Leone 2020 after been beaten 6 nil on Wednesday 26th February 2020 at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni.
The Women’s Scorpions went a goal down after a good start in the opening minutes that continued for nearly 33 minutes but got nipped against a penalty call following defender Amie Jarju’s wayward fouling in the penalty area for Aguissa Diarra to step up for the converted kick. Jarju was eventually shown her marching orders and the Gambia reduced to ten players.

Coach Mariama Sowe and her charges could not recover at their convenience and as such Mali with their numerical advantage put up high pressing game against the Gambia resulting to their second through Oumou Kone making it Two nil at the struck of Half Time.
Matters worsened for the Women’s Scorpions after resuming for the final stanza as Mali ran rioting to put four pass the Gambian girls with Oumou Kone recording her brace a minute after the restart.
Aguissa Diarra also got her hat trick while Senubu Sidibeh made the final on the coffin at 6-0 to Mali. The feloow West Africans now lead Group B with 3 points while Guinea Bissau and Liberia also take on each other in the later game in Makeni.
The Gambia will now be looking to put things right in their final two games when they play to Liberia and Guinea Bissau in the coming days.
