Red Scorpions have won the national women first division league at the weekend when they defeated their nearest challengers to the title to establish an unassailable 9 points lead with only two matches remaining. They would be crowned champions when they wrap up their campaign against The Gambia Armed Forces in 10 days.
In a top of the table clash at the National Technical Training Centre at Old Yundum, the defending champions Interior had the chance to cut Red Scorpions’ lead at the top to just three points heading into the final two matches but their 2-0 defeat at the hands of their traditional rivals instead means they have surrendered their crown to the Jeshwang-based side who would no longer be caught on the standing. They have 33 points from their 13 matches played, meaning all season they’ve dropped just six points while Interior is second on 24 points.
Red Scorpions’ impressive run to the championship is once again spearheaded by their talismanic forward and captain Adama Tamba who banged in an impressive 16 goals from the 39 goals that they scored so far this season. This means she alone accounts for 33% of the team’s goals. Aminata Camara also banged in four goals whilst Penda Colley and Haddy Drammeh each scored three goals this season.
Elsewhere on Saturday, basement side City Girls’ poor run continues after succumbing to yet another defeat, this time a 2-0 loss to The Gambia Armed Forces. With the defeat, they remained bottom of the six-team table with 6 points, just a point adrift of second from bottom Immigration, who drew goalless with Abuko United on Sunday.
One team is normally relegated from the first division, however, both City Girls and Immigration, one of whom would’ve been sent to the second tier, could be saved from relegation with the first division likely to be increased to eight teams. This means that the top two finishers in the second tier would join those that participated in the 2018/19 season to make up an eight-team league in 2019/20.
In the women’s first division league, the participating teams play each other three times in a season for a 15-match season in the top flight. Abuko United is third on the table with 17 points, two points ahead of fourth place Gambia Armed Forces.
