PSV Wellingara and Young Africans are the latest teams to advance to the last eight of the domestic cup competition following their respective post-match penalty shootout wins over Tujereng and The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) on Friday night.
The first match of the day saw struggling first division side PSV Wellingara took on Tujereng of the third division in a West Coast Region derby at Bakau’s Independence Stadium and following a goalless stalemate at the end of regulation time, the former advanced to the next round from the spot.
In the late game that was played over two days, starting before midnight and finishing after it, GAF also played a barren stalemate with Young Africans before the tie was settled from eleven yards, where the defending cup champions and first division leaders would become the latest casualties from the spot as latter advanced 5-4. With their cup elimination, GAF will now have only the first division to rely on any hopes of silverware this season. They currently led the 14-team table where the gap between first and third are is only two points.
PSV and Young Africans now joined Real de Banjul and The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the quarterfinals who defeated Lions of Banjul and Sporting Real respectively on Thursday. Elsewhere, in a round of 32 replay on Thursday, Tallinding United defeated The Gambia Ports Authority 2-0 to set up a last 16 round match with Wallidan at the Independence Stadium on Saturday with kickoff at 8:30pm. The late game of today will pit Hawks against Marimoo with that match also to be played at the same venue.
The final round of 16 matches will be played on Sunday when B4U Kiang West of the second division hosts Bakau Katchikally (BK) Milan of the first division at 8:30pm. The last and late game would see Red Hawks entertain defending first division champions Gamtel.
