Leaders Suffer Promotion Setback, 16 Goals in 2nd Division

Leaders Samger and Falcons both suffered promotion setbacks after they were held to draws by Young Africans and Red Hawks respectively.

It was week 20 in the second tier and while Samger and Young Africans played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Live Your Dreams Football Academy in Basori, Falcons could only settle for a drab goalless stalemate with The Hawks at Bakau’s Independence Stadium on Wednesday.

With the draws, both teams are still levelled at the summit of the 16-team table with 40 points but the Cherno Samba Academy outfit leads the way due to their superior goal difference. With the top four finishers all earning automatic promotion to the top flight at the end of the season, the leading duo’s draw couldn’t be entirely seen as a failure in their quest for promotion as Team Rhino failed to close the gap after they capitulated in the second half by letting slipped a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Latrikunda United.

The biggest winners, however, were third place Jam City who spanked PSV Wellingara 2-0 at the Late Ousman Saho playing ground in Old Yundum. The win saw Jam City closed the gap to within four points of the leading duo with Team Rhino a further six points adrift in fifth.

In total, 16 goals were scored across seven different fixtures, averaging 2.3 per game. One of those goals were scored at the Independence Stadium where home side Steve Biko continued their recent resurgence with a 1-0 defeat of Bombada while 2nd Infantry Battalion beat basement side Jarra West 2-1 at the Soma Mini Stadium. Elsewhere, Gunjur United kept their promotion hopes alive with a 1-0 defeat of Immigration at the Late Ousman Saho Field.

The final game of the round will come from the Independence Stadium today when B4U Kiang West takes on Serrekunda Eastbi at 4pm.
