Gambia Misses Semi Final Berth At WAFU Zone A Tourney

The Gambia has missed out a place to the Semi Finals of the WAFU Zone A Women’s tournament after her Queens failed short of a win against Liberia in their final match day in Group B played on Monday 2nd March 2020 at the Wassum Sports Stadium in Makeni.

The Women Scorpions lost 2-1 to a combative Liberia side that will now join their fellows to the Semi Finals. The Gambia on Friday put up a strong fight and made a convincing win over Bissau Guinea 5-2 at full time but failed to cement the momentum.

Liberia opened their scoring in the earliest minutes of the proceedings through Kantie Sayee in the 1st minute before Margaret Stewart doubled the scoring 14 minutes later. The two quick goals in succession ushered Liberia into lemon time.

Second Half resumption was a better omen for the Gambia as star player and Red Scorpions ace Adama Tamba pulled one back for the Smiling Coast in the 60th minute. But Tamba’s consolation wasnt enough for the Gambia and thus missed a Semi Final berth.

Liberia now joins group leaders Mali, who finished with maximum points after beating Guinea Bissau 2-0 in their final game played on the same day at Bo City, into the semi-finals of the inaugural tournament. Liberia will face Senegal on Wednesday 4th March, while Mali takes on Cape Verde.

Liberia and Mali are now the winners from Group B and will join Group A leaders, Senegal and Cape Verde in the semifinals of the ongoing maiden edition of the WAFU Zone A Female Championship.

Group A completed its final matches which saw Senegal on 7 points and seconded by Cape Verde on 4 points to progress to the semis, while Sierra Leone with 3 points and Guinea with 1 point got their elimination from the tournament. Group B completed its stages with Mali on 9 points and Liberia on 6 points joining Senegal and Cape Verde in the semifinals.

Group B leaders Mali will travel to Makeni City to face Group A runner-up Cape Verde, while Group B runner-up Liberia will travel to Bo City to face Group A leaders Senegal in the Semifinals on Wednesday 4th March 2020
