Bah Basks in Celebration as Women’s U-20 Wins over Liberia

Head Coach Foday Bah has expressed his delight following his Gambia Women’s U-20 team’s 3-2 come from behind defeat of Liberia in an international friendly played at the Independence Stadium on Tuesday.

Bah’s charges received a shock from their visitors who took an early first half lead but the Gambians scored three goals through Catherine Jatta, Captain Aminata Camara and substitute Fatou Sawo to establish a 3-1 lead before a last-kick-of-the-game goal saw the visitors pulled a goal further back.

“I am just happy because of the performance and result. Coming from behind to win shows the character in the team. When we started training I told them that football is 90 minutes and it doesn’t matter [because] you can start the game and concede two or three goals in the first half but in the second half you can score three or four times because football is two halves. This shows the character of the team, we were a goal down but we performed very well and fought so hard to get the three points,” Bah told reporters in a post-match interview.

The two sides will square off again on Friday 9th August 2019 at the same venue for the second and final of the two-match series. Bah added that the matches will further expose his girls and prepare them for future competitions. Thus, he thanked The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) for the support and the initiative to establish a women’s U-20 category team for the first time.

Liberia Coach Robert Larty thanked the GFF for the invitation and said both teams have very good players. “First of all I want to appreciate the GFF for the test match. I’m impressed with the two teams. The Gambia has a very good female team likewise Liberia we are all on the preparations stage. We started training two weeks ago and to come and perform in the manner we did I think is a plus to our player,” he said, while promising to bounce back on Friday.
