Football may have returned to other countries for months despite the lack of fanfare in the stadiums, but in The Gambia, there had been a continuous embargo on sporting activities as a result of the devastating effects of the Covid19 pandemic.
But after more than 10 months of uncertainty dating back to the aborting of the domestic football campaign in early 2020, Gambian fans can now look forward to their favorites teams playing each other every week with the season set to get underway tomorrow with four division two fixtures across as many venues.
Latrikunda United were leading the second division when the season was aborted last spring and they will begin their push for a place in the first division against Falcons at the National Technical Training Centre (NTTC) in Yundum.
Steve Biko will be amongst the early favorites for a return to the topflight after few years in the second tier and will get their campaign underway with a home fixtures against Jarra West in a match to be played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
At the Live Your Dreams Sports Academy football ground in Basori, there will be a meeting between former first division sides Bombada and Samger as the two teams seek to avoid an early setback in their quest for a return to the elite of Gambian football. The final match of the day will be played at the Jarra Soma Mini Stadium when B4U Kiang West host Red Hawks.
On Thursday, Immigration FC will travel to Basori to take on Gunjur United while Young Africans rub shoulders with Team Rhino at the Independence Stadium and 2nd Infantry Battalion of Farafenni takes on PSV Wellingara in Soma. Jam City and Serrekunda East Bi will round up action in week one with a meeting at the NTTC in Yundum.
