Women Scorpions Beat Sukuta Academy in 7-Goal Thriller

The Gambia’s Women’s National Team yesterday defeated Sukuta Youths Academy 4-3 in a friendly played at the National Technical Training Center (NTTC) in Old Yundum in a preparatory match ahead of two international friendlies lined up against their visiting Ethiopian equivalents.

The match against the Academy’s U-16 team got to a fine footing by the Women Scorpions as they put two past them in the early minutes of the game. However, Sukuta got the last laugh before the break as they pulled levelled at 2-2 going into halftime.

Coach Mariam Bom Sowe effected some substitutions after the break and the substitutes made an immediate impact as they restored the two-goal advantage. Meanwhile, the Young Academy outfit did not rest on their search for a way back into the game, but fall short of it as they could only pulled one further goal back to complete the scoring in the seven-goal thriller.

Speaking to GFF website after the game, Coach Sowe expressed his delight with the performances of her team, which according to her was a good test for her charges. Bom said the core of the team is selected from Red Scorpions, Interior, The Gambia Armed Forces, Abuko United and Immigration who are all into the semifinals of the Football Federation (FF) Cup except Immigration FC.

Sowe stated that the team started training on Friday and described the camp as smooth saying professional players like Isatou Jallow and Penda Sowe have also joined the group. She thanked The Gambia Football Federation (GFF), Monica Staab and his assistant Abdoulie Bojang for their unflinching support to the team.

The Gambia will be engaged in two International friendlies against Ethiopia, the first of which will take place on Saturday 15th June and the final game will be on Tuesday 18th June 2019, with both matches to be played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
