Little known third division side GCAA/BIA (The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority/Banjul International Airport) produced the biggest shock of the round of 32 thus far in the FF Cup when they defeated former Gambian champions Brikama United 6-5 on post-match penalty shootouts following a goalless draw in regulation time. The red-letter day for the Aviation boys was on 23rd April and it came at Brikama’s so-called “Slaughtering Ground” of the Box Bar Mini Stadium.
In the late kickoff between league one strugglers PSV Wellingara and second division side Jam City at the same venue was also decided in the gruesome post-match penalty shootout. Following a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation time, the first division side prevailed 3-1 from eleven yards.
Elsewhere, on Tuesday in The Gambia Football Federation’s (GFF) most prestigious club competition, Young Africans sent stuttering Brufut United packing despite a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. It was a horrible moment for both teams from the post-match penalties where the former won 2-0. In another late kickoff, Tallinding United’s tie with The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) has been forced into a replay following a 1-1 draw. The two sides couldn’t proceed to the post-match penalties following darkness and now the Organising Committee would decide whether to play a full game or only the shootout.
At the Independence Stadium, it was record winners Wallidan who made it into the last 16 following a 3-1 win over Team Rhino whilst Hawks continues their good run of form with a hard fought 2-1 defeat of second division side Serrekunda East Bi.
Matches continue on Wednesday 24th April 2019 when Steve Biko takes on B4U Kiang West at the Independence Stadium at 3pm while Marimoo entertains Banjul United in the late kick off. Elsewhere, Waa Banjul will entertain Red Hawks in what will be a Banjul derby at 3pm while Real de Banjul will be looking to avoid an early exit from the competition when they take on Gunjur United.
Finally at the Box Bar in Brikama, Bombada will host third division side Tujereng in the afternoon kick off and Gamtel will wrap up the round with Immigration at 5pm to complete the fixtures of Wednesday.
