The Gambia’s most prestigious club competition continues to produce more shocking results with giant killing performances from little known clubs who can only dream or a miracle as they takes on the big boys. In the second match day of the FF Cup, Tujereng of the West Coast Regional third division league knocked out Bombada with a 2-0 defeat of the former first division side on Wednesday.
The match was played at the Box Bar Mini Stadium in Brikama, the scene of a similar shocking result 24 hours earlier when another West Coast Regional third division side, GCAA/BIA (The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority/Banjul International Airport) defeated Brikama United on post-match penalty shootout to advance to the last 16 of the competition.
Defending league champions Gamtel put behind the disappointment of their last league outing to beat Immigration 1-0 and advance to the next stage. It was the first match for the Telecom giants since their Coach Sulayman Kuyateh was awarded the Coach of the Year by the Sports Journalist Association of The Gambia at their National Sports Awards on Saturday.
Elsewhere, at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, Steve Biko remains consistent on their inconsistency as they continue to flatter to deceive. They suffered a shock exit in the hands of first time campaigners B4U Kiang West. The Lower River Regional giants, who only joins the elite of Gambian football by winning their regional third division league last year was making their first ever appearance in the competition and advanced to the next round having triumphed 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate at the end of regulation time.
Marimoo is also through to the next stage at the expense of Banjul United, beating them 2-1. The Banjul derby at the King George V Mini Stadium saw Red Hawks defeated second division league leaders Waa Banjul 5-3 on penalties after playing a goalless draw in regulation time. In the final game of the day on Wednesday, Real de Banjul recorded the biggest win of the round of 32 so far as they thrashed Gunjur United 6-0.
The final batches of matches will be played on Thursday 25th April 2019 when Lions of Banjul host 2nd Infantry Battalion at 3pm in Banjul and division one leaders The Gambia Armed Forces entertains Fortune at 5pm. Meanwhile, at the Independence Stadium, Latrikunda United takes on Sporting Real in the 3pm kickoff while first division strugglers Samger FC will lock horns with BK Milan.
