Sporting Real Extends Lead at 2nd Division Summit

Sporting Real edges closer to first division promotion in their first ever campaign in the national second division championship. The Banjul-based side on Monday thrashed Steve Biko 3-0 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau to open up a four-lead at the summit of the 16-team standings.

Sporting had hit the second division with storm and was accumulating wins for fun but a string of poor results saw them surrender their lead at the top to WAA Banjul. However, they have finally reclaimed their mojo and showing the same sign of their early season form by overtaking their biggest challengers for promotion. With 24 matches played, they have 51 points, four ahead of second place WAA Banjul who can narrow the gap today to solitary point as they have a game in hand.

Sporting Real’s success is largely down to the prolific nature of star striker Alieu Barry and his goals. He was again the savior against the Giant Killers, Steve Biko, hitting a first half hat-trick to ensure the emphatic win. With the trio of goals, Barry is now on 16 strikes for the season.

Elsewhere in week 24, Brikama-based Bombada Football Club thrashed bottom of the table Lions of Banjul 5-2 at the Box Bar Mini Stadium. The result draws Lions of Banjul closer to the third tier of Gambian football as they can only show of 17 points from their 24 matches. With just six matches before the end of the season, they have to start winning if they are to stand any realistic chance of staying up.

Meanwhile, there was a rescheduled match in the first division between The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) and Bakau Katchikally Milan (BK Milan). The week 22 match saw both sides nullified each other’s attacks as they settled for a drab goalless stalemate. With the result, BK Milan is 6th on the 14-team table with 29 points while Ports trails two points behind them.
