Scorpion Dembo Darboe has won the golden boot award for scoring the highest goals in the just concluded Belarusian premier league campaign.
Darboe, 23, scored 19 goals and provided 12 further assists as his Shakhtyor Soligorsk won the league title. The last Shakhtyor player to win the top scorer award in Belarus was Nikolay Yanush who banged in 16 goals and before him Dmitri Osipenko in 2012 with 14.
During the course of the campaign, he won the most valuable player five times and six man-of-the-match performances. He scored 30% of the team’s 64 goals this season and combined with the assists, he directly participated in 48.4% of those goals.
Dembo, whose siblings in Landing (Delpierro) and Abdou both represented The Gambia National Team, was also voted as the player of the season by his fellow professional players, fans and coaches in the league. And speaking in an interview with the GFF Media, he described the golden boot award as a dream come true for him.
“It’s a dream come true for me because I’ve been working very hard for it. I was always having this believe and hoping that I can finish as top goal scorer and thanks to Allah I’ve realised the dream,” he asserted.
Speaking further, Darboe thanked his teammates and the fans for making it possible to achieve such a great feat, noting that without them it would’ve have been possible. “I’m so glad to win the golden boot and I know my team expected this from me which is why they spend a record money to bring me here. They believe in me and know that I have the potential to do it. Since joining I also try hard to prove that right,” he added.
With a record-breaking season behind him, Darboe wouldn’t be sort of suitors during the European summer or even the winter season. There has been reports that clubs in mainland Europe are already queuing to win the race for his signature. And the young sensation is finally prepared to take the next step forward in his career.
“I have teams overseas, very strong teams that are following me but nothing is confirmed yet. I leave everything in the hands of Allah, anything He gives me I will take it,” he concluded.
