Samger Football Club on Wednesday defeated basement side 2nd Infantry Battalion 1-0 and, in the process, leapfrogged Falcons to reclaim top spot in the national second division league.
The Cherno Samba Academy outfit went into yesterday’s encounter with the Farafenni-based side at Real de Banjul’s home of football, The Live Your Dreams Sports Academy Complex in Basori, with the knowledge that victory would catapult them to top spot after Falcons’ drab goalless draw with Team Rhino 24 hours earlier.
They took full advantage of the situation and are now levelled on 39 points with the Abuko side but the former lead the way because of their superior goal difference. However, despite eleven match days still remaining, the leading duo is the hot favorites to secure two of the four places on offer for first division promotion at the end of the season.
Elsewhere on Thursday, Steve Biko was held to a goalless draw by Gunjur United at the Independence Stadium, while Red Hawks saw off the challenge from Jam City 2-1 at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field in Old Yundum. The win sees The Hawks moved to sixth on the 16-team table with 26 points, while Jam City remained on third, seven ahead of their opponents.
Meanwhile, at the Jarra Soma Mini Stadium, hosts B4U Kiang West blew away Young Africans with an impressive 3-1 win to overtake the Banjul-based side and moved up the table to 11th on 23 points, two ahead of the Africans. On Tuesday, Bombada and PSV Wellingara cancelled each other out with a 1-1 stalemate at the Live Your Dreams Sports Academy Complex.
The final matches of the week will take place later today when eighth place Latrikunda United takes on second from bottom Jarra West at the Late Ousman Saho Field. Latrikunda can move to sixth with a win while Jarra will move out of the relegation zone with three points.
Two relegation threatened sides, Serrekunda Eastbi and Immigration, will lock horns at the Independence Stadium with both teams needing the points to put some daylight between them and the drop zone.
