Gunjur Thrashes Lions of Banjul, Brufut Mauled Again

It was a day to forget on Thursday 16th May 2019 for the relegation threatened teams as both Brufut United and Lions of Banjul were involved in high scoring defeats to Red Hawks and Gunjur United respectively to bring to an end week twenty-five of matches in the domestic second division league.

Gunjur United were the biggest winners as they put more misery on bottom club Lions of Banjul with a 5-0 thumping. The result sends the West Coast Region side to joint fourth with Bombada on 42 points but the Brikama based outfit has a better goal difference of 24 while Gunjur has 15.

The result means Lions of Banjul’s continuous slides towards relegation shows no sign of abating and are edging ever closer to third division football. With just five matches to go, they are seven points adrift of safety with a goal difference of -28.

The final game for the week involved two relegation threatened teams as 13th place Red Hawks took on second from bottom Brufut United. Red Hawks went home with all three points to get further away from the relegation zone with a 3-0 mauling of the “Sanemengteren” Boys. Brufut is now into deeper trouble as they remains in the relegation zone with 21 points, 3 points from safety and with only 4 points ahead of basement side Lions of Banjul. On the other hand, Red Hawks moved a place to 12th on 27 points, a point below 2nd Infantry Battalion who are 11th with 28 points.

With five more matches to go and 15 points at stake, the battle for the tittle and relegation will be very interesting. It remains to be seen who will get the two qualification spots and the two that will play in their respective regional third division leagues.
