The grassroots football tournament pioneered by the Gambia Football Federation kicked off in Banjul on Thursday February 28 at the KG5 Mini Stadium.
Four matches were played in two phases for both male and female categories. Wesley pitted up against Campama for both the male and female categories while Albion and Muhamedan squared off at the opposite half of the field.
In the opening kick off for the girl’s category, Wesley lost to Campama 2-0 with a sterling revelation in Oumie Sonko who recorded a brace for the winners and nominated as most outstanding player in that fixture. Correspondingly, Campama’s male team were whipped 7-3.
In the other games also played on Thursday, Albion girls lost 1-0 to Muhammedan in a highly contested match that saw the winners also missed a penalty. Their boys also lost to Albion 4-1 in another entertaining match filled with crowd vigor and roaring shouts and claps from the students at the stands.
Matches will continue at the KG5 on Friday 29th February with St Marys vs JC Faye and Methodist to take on Albion in both the male and female categories.
Similar matches will open up in the KM on Saturday 2nd March at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium where Bundung Lower Basic School will take on Bakoteh Annex in both boys and girls and Serrekunda Annex to square off with New Convenant in similar categories.
