Fortune Goes 10 Points Clear in Division 1

Fortune Football Club continued its match towards their first domestic league title by opening up a 10-point lead at the top of the 14-team table following a 1-0 defeat of Marimoo on Thursday night.

It is the first match day in the second round and it was watched by thousands of spectators who observed strict public health guidelines. The spectators were entertained to a spectacle with a breathtaking display of end-to-end attacking football.

Marimoo had several opportunities to take the lead but were left to rue their missed opportunities when Ensa Keita bundled in a rebound after an initial shot had cannoned off the crossbar. The Manjai Kunda based outfit had other opportunities to ensure parity but a combination of defensive solidity, heroic goalkeeping and lack of ruthlessness by their forwards was the catalyst to their failure.

Jane Joof’s side is now on 32 points from 14 matches but second place Gambia Armed Forces can close the gap to within seven points with victory over eighth place Hawks in the late kickoff on Friday.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Joof disclosed that former Scorpion Momodou Zico Ceesay and midfielder Ebrima Sohna are currently training with his team with a view to snapping them up for the second half of the season but was quick to add that no deal had been reached with the duo yet.

In the second match of Thursday night, Gambia Ports Authority secured a 1-0 defeat of Wallidan to move to third on the table with 21 points. Lawrence Bass scored the game’s only goal with a fantastic free-kick from 20 yards after just 10 minutes into the match. Marimoo remains 10th on 13 points.

The first match to be played under the floodlights at Bakau’s Independence Stadium today will see fourth place Brikama United entertain B.K. Milan at 8:30pm. Victory will temporally take Brikama above Ports and GAF to second while the Bakau side, languishing just above the relegation zone can move to joint eight with the three points.
