Banjul United moved out of the bottom two on Sunday night despite a goalless stalemate with Waa Banjul in the clash of two teams from the capital city.
The match, played under the floodlights at Bakau’s Independence Stadium, was the last match day in week 14 of the domestic first division season. As usual of the night matches these days, it was watched by a decent crowd and both sides exhibited some scintillating display of breathtaking attacking football but it disappointingly failed to produce a goal.
Victory for Banjul United would’ve put further daylight between them and the drop zone but nevertheless, the solitary point could prove very valuable at the end of the season as they currently lie a point ahead of BK Milan and Wallidan with basement side Tallinding United a further two points adrift.
United’s Muhammed Samba had the best chance of the match after going face-to-face with goalkeeper Pa Ebou Dampha who produced a spectacular save to ensure he went home with his sixth successive clean sheet. At the other end, Waa Banjul thought they had secured a crucial winner that would’ve catapulted Abdou Njie’s side to joint second on the 14-team table when they had the ball at the back of the next in the second stanza but their celebrations were short-lived for an alleged off-sight.
Waa Banjul remains joint fourth with Ports Authority on 21 points, two adrift of Brikama United and Gambia Armed Forces with runaway leaders Fortune Football Club a further nine points ahead.
Matches resume this Thursday when GAF and Brikama United, levelled 23 points entertain each other in the early kickoff of 8:30pm while the late match sees Real de Banjul and Elite United come face-to-face in one of the matches that would’ve be the standout fixtures of the season.
